For visitors looking for relaxation and leisure the natural beauties of the nature reserve are the Franconian Forest’s most important assets. Well marked and well maintained by the Franconian Forest association a grand total of some three thousand five hundred kilometres of trails are ready and waiting for all fans of hiking to enjoy. 13 kilometres of these walks form part of the famous Renn-steig the final stages of which form the start of the Frankenweg. 123 km of the Frankenweg opened in 2004 and covering a full 520 km to the Swabian Alb cross the Franconian Forest. A new addition is the "Burgenweg – a historic trail". Similar to the Frankenweg the Burgenweg which has also been awarded "Germany’s high-quality trail“ certification, takes hikers to the region’s natural and cultural highlights.
In addition to enjoying a long hiking tradition the Franconian Forest is now also offering plenty of opportunities for cycling enthusiasts. The gently rolling hills and low level mountains rising to the 794 m high Döbraberg make the region ideal for anyone who is relatively fit and who has a bicycle with a modern gear change. For those not wanting to tackle the somewhat steeper paths the trails running through the meadow filled valleys displaying the Franconian Forest’s inimitable charm or the path along the Ködel valley dam – the largest reservoir dam in Bavaria much favoured by inline skaters – are a very viable alternative. 300 kilometres of mountain bike trails, new fun trails on the Döbraberg and the region’s well-maintained quiet side roads ensure that the somewhat fitter mountain bikers and racing cyclists are also well catered for.
Further leisure facilities
In winter the Franconian Forest’s excellent network of well-prepared pistes and trails have made the region popular with Alpine and Nordic skiers alike. The Franconian Forest is an absolute Eldorado for anyone who enjoys a more active holiday as it is not only home to Franconia’s most extensive network of cross-country trails but also has well-marked Nordic walking trails and plenty of opportunity for riding, golf, paragliding and much, much more.
